Tips to Keep Your Child's Smile Healthy

Your child's smile is something that brings you joy in life, and good oral hygiene can keep that smile healthy and beautiful! Here at Upper East Smiles on the Upper East Side, our pediatric dentist, Dr. Jennifer Chon, provides full-service, state-of-the-art dental care to kids of all ages. Here are 5 tips to keep your child's smile healthy, and if it's time for your child's next cleaning, give us a call!

1. Brush Teeth Daily

Your child's teeth need to be brushed at least twice a day. Make sure to use a soft, child-sized brush, but don't use fluoridated toothpaste until your child is over 2 years old. When your child's toothbrush starts to look worn out and frayed, it's time to invest in a new one.

2. Floss Teeth Daily

You should begin flossing your child's teeth with dental floss or an interdental cleaner when they first start developing baby teeth. Daily flossing removes food particles and dental plaque in places where a brush cannot easily reach. Research has shown that flossing regularly helps to prevent periodontal (gum) disease and tooth decay.

3. Ditch the Sugar

Certain bacteria feed on the sugars that we eat to create acids that destroy enamel, thus leading to cavities. Cutting down on the sugar in your child's diet greatly helps to prevent this common dental issue.

4. Dental Checkups

Regular dental checkups are important because they keep your child's smile healthy. During a checkup, your pediatric dentist will check your child's teeth for decay and gum disease. This exam also includes checking your child's mouth, face, and neck for abnormalities. A dental check-up at least twice a year is recommended in order to prevent tooth decay and other issues.

5. Teeth Cleanings

Generally included during a dental checkup, teeth cleanings are necessary in order to keep your child's smile bright and healthy. This dental procedure involves the removal of the plaque and tartar that inevitably develops on teeth, even with careful brushing and flossing. Regular teeth cleanings can prevent cavities, periodontal disease, and oral infections, as well as provide children with good oral hygiene.
